Retro Print Card

I’ve had an idea for a card design in my head for a while, inspired by the retro prints by Orla Kiely. This months challenge at Seven Hills Crafts is a colour challenge. I chose the third colour palette and finally made the card.

One of the leaf stamps from the WPlus9 Doodle Buds stamps set reminded me of the Orla Kiely retro print. I wanted to see if I could create a patterned card similar to this popular design.

On a piece of watercolour card, I stamped the leaf image repeatedly in Memento Dye Ink Teal Zeal ink. I used my new Mini Misti stamping tool to help me line the stamp up perfectly. It really made this a lot easier. I stamped two columns of the leaf image to the left and middle of the card, making sure to keep the gaps between each stamped image as uniform as possible.

I chose distress ink colours to match the challenge colour palette as closely as possible. I used peacock feathers, abandoned coral, stormy sky, black soot, and mowed lawn. I put the inks on to an acrylic block, added a little water, then watercoloured the leaves in using a small paintbrush. I attached the watercolour card to an A6 card base using double sided tape.

For the sentiment, I die cut the Lil’ Inker Stitched Sentiment Flag Die from white card. I heat embossed in white a greeting from Clearly Besotted A Little Sentimental stamp set, then blended stormy sky distress ink on to the flag, so it matched the colour scheme. I attached it to the card with foam tape.

I added a few enamel dots in matching colours to finish the card.

I love it when I can finally get a design out of my head and made into a card. I’m really pleased with this card, it turned out exactly how I wanted. I think it could work with one column of leaves or even three to cover the background. The colour possibilities are endless too.

Thanks for stopping by to read my blog. Have a lovely day.

I’m entering this card into the following competition:
