Today I’m joining in the Lawn Fawnatics challenge #72, to create a project inspired by a book, movie or song. I really enjoyed this theme last year so knew I wanted to create something again – this time with the magic iris.

My card is inspired by Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End. There is an epic battle scene in the film between pirate ships, on the edge of a giant whirlpool (maelstrom). The magic iris mechanism is perfect for creating this whirlpool scene.

I began by die cutting the iris donut from white card for the top layer and black card for the other layers. I also used black card for the rest of the mechanism.
I added a distress oxide blend to the white donut and ‘sausage pieces’ of the iris. I used cracked pistachio, peacock feathers and black soot. I didn’t ink over the part where the glue dots will go as others have said it can make it tricky to adhere the dots.

To add whirlpool movement lines, I took a small paintbrush and some water and painted on some lines. I used a paper towel to dab away the colour, leaving lighter lines.
For the centre of the iris, I used WOW Opaque Bright White super fine powder to emboss a greeting on a black centre circle.
I cut a piece of Rainforest card to 5 x 5 inches. This matched very well to the ink blending on the magic iris, so saves lots of ink blending. In the top corner, I embossed the compass from Lawn Fawn Ahoy Matey with the same white embossing powder.

I adhered the panel to my square card base. I then assembled my magic iris and adhered that and the inner circle to my card. I die cut the tab from rainforest card too, so it blends in better.
I coloured lots of images from the Lawn Fawn Ahoy Matey stamp set. I also added the shark fin from Duh-Nuh. I used liquid glue to adhere all the images, adding the two ships to the whirlpool. I made sure to position them away from the magic iris lever.
For some finishing touches, I stamped the waves images from the set on the background, using Lawn Fawn River Rock ink. I then drew some map lines using a white gel pen.
